Weekly Picture Project

Week 1

'Presentation of Self in Everyday Life'

We all have many sides to our personality, or like an onion - many layers to make up one's 'self'.
To protect our most venerable aspects we hide our true self behind our most favourable features, while at other times we choose to share one or more of those sides with different individuals.
The decision to share any element of our 'self' will be dictated by past experiences and our interpretation of others.
You may know many sides of a person, but still not know who they really are.
Often there is an element of 'keeping up appearances'.

Week 2

'Everyday unusual'

I came across two very different types of unusual so decided to share them both.

Visitors in the park
Nestled within a peaceful plot, waiting to be be discovered.

High rise
The legacy of social housing blots the autumnal skyline. In disrepair, rusty and old, but this place is home.

Week 3
'Pattern in the built environment'
This week I set out to find some patten that represented old mill towns, I didn't need to look very far.
These are the two images I choose.
No longer smoking and blowing

Week 4

'October Colour & Light '

When planning this weeks weekly picture project, consideration must be given to the bright light which is inherent in Autumn, a low sun and the abundance of colour can play havoc with a camera's auto white balance.
I took several shoots using; auto white balance, daylight & cloudy settings to see the difference in the image, and also bracketed the exposure because I was worried about over exposure in the bight sunlight.

Because I wanted to take pictures of leaves that where still on the tree (as apposed to fallen or falling leaves) I opted for a zoom lens so the height of the tree was not an issue!

In post production, I was happy with the overall composition, but cropped slightly to remove the edge of a building in the background, which was unavoidable. I also increased the saturation in photoshop, however this was selective, and used only to further draw the viewers eye to the remaining green leaf in the centre of the frame.

This is the final image

Week 5

The magic hour

For this weeks picture project we were required to take an image during the 'magic hour', which is the hour of sunrise and sunset. During the tutorial we discussed that images taken at this time tended to have a 'mood' about them due to either the diminishing light, or the colour palette present.
In preparation, I looked up the sunrise/sunset times for the coming week and the weather forecast in the Internet to ensure that i was giving myself the best possible chance of success.
I also researched images from an exhibition that was shown in the V&A museum in 2006. I noted that a lot of the images were landscapes & 'typical' sunrise images, which whilst were very well taken and displayed the available light and colour at it's best, didn't really convey a 'mood' to me. I was far more moved and drawn to darker images, so I used this as my inspiration.

The image I have chosen, still shows the autumnal colour in diminishing light, but the darker sky and angle of light hopefully creates a 'twilight' mood and shows the texture of the headstone. Whilst overall I am happy with the image, I think a higher ISO to obtain a 'grainy' finish would have been more effective. I also think a shorter shutter speed would have made the image 'darker' and perhaps sinister, but I didn't want to loose the available colour.

Week 6

Family
For this project I wanted to take some candid shots that really captured who the people around me are. However, in my house, if I get the camera out people either pose or hide, so candid shots were not going to be easy.
I positioned myself and camera in the corner of a fairly bright room, but I knew the flash would need to be used in order to get a fast shutter speed and avoid people looking at the camera.

Here are my chosen images
